Following satnav directions now part of UK driving test

The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency has said that the driving test is changing, from 4 December this year, “to make sure new drivers have the skills they’ll need to help them through a lifetime of safe driving.”

Changes to the test cover independent driving, reversing and vehicle safety. For the new satnav element, the examiner will provide the device, set it up and provide the route. However, one in five driving tests won’t use a satnav and drivers will need to follow traffic signs instead.

“It’s vital that the driving test keeps up to date with new vehicle technology and the areas where new drivers face the greatest risk once they’ve passed their test,” said the agency’s chief executive Gareth Llewellyn.
