Strong UK showing in FinTech50

London dominated the 2017 FinTech50

British companies dominate the newly released FinTech50, a list of 50 European businesses “who are transforming financial services”.

33 out of 50 companies on the list are based in London, with a notable absence of Scotland-based FinTech companies. Pay-as-you-go car insurance Cuvva – a company that was founded in Scotland but is now headquartered in London – makes an appearance on the list. The strong showing cements the capital’s position as a FinTech leader in Europe.

The list is compiled by a panel comprised of “some of the most international people in FinTech around the world representing investors, financial organizations, global techs and influencers”.

Julie Lake, founding director of the FinTech50 noted that there was “an emerging evangelism for challenger brands from a very important source: their customers.”

“They may not have (anywhere near) the customer volume of traditional providers, but they are winning hearts and minds in a style more often associated with consumer goods.”

“Five years in, a number of successful entrepreneurs are now founding their second FinTech businesses.”

This year’s FinTech50 recognised more women in FinTech, with almost 20% of companies on the list having a female founder or CEO.
