DataLab’s chief exec in top 10 of UK’s 100 most influential

Gillian Docherty, chief executive of The Data Lab, has been placed number 10 in a 100-strong list of influential data professionals in the UK.

Docherty began her career with IBM after completing a computing science degree at Glasgow University and spent 22 years with the firm in various roles across the UK. She joined the Data Lab in June 2015.

“As an innovation centre funded by the Scottish Funding Council, we are shaping the data science landscape in Scotland, assisting industry and public sector to leverage data in new ways,” said Docherty. “We have skills and talent programmes to help create the environment for investing in Scotland and we have built a very strong data science community in Scotland and beyond.”

“The use of data will continue to have a fundamental impact on our lives and every aspect of them. Isn’t it great to be at the heart of something so core to how the world will evolve in the next 20-plus years? It is the most exciting time to be involved and the breadth of opportunity is huge. I can’t imagine a better place to be to have such a significant impact.”

The list has been produced by DataIQ, the network for data and analytics practitioners. At number one is Andy Day, chief data officer at Sainsbury’s.
