A new Scotland-wide street data facility allows residents to discover who is responsible for road maintenance in their local areas.

Each street is assigned a unique street reference number which is a definitive ID of each road and this enables linking of street information and transactions across different areas of service delivery.

The Improvement Service’s new lookup tool contains the detailed spatial geometry of each ‘adopted road’ and allows for a map search or searches via a text lookup.

All Scottish roads authorities have a duty to publish this information, known as the List Of Public Roads, however, this had not previously been available in a central location, along with the detailed digital street layout.

The service therefore offers efficiencies for the users, who can source the information from a single location, as well as financial and business benefits to the local authorities.

The National Street Gazetteer for Scotland is available within Ordnance Survey’s Highways’ product suite and National Geographic Database and the information underpins countless navigation and routing applications.

Adopted roads are streets which are maintained by the local authority or Transport Scotland, as opposed to those which are under private maintenance.

The new online lookup service is available via the One Scotland Gazetteer, which is the official source of authoritative address and street information for Scotland and the street data represents a digital twin of the road network.
