She received an OBE in the 2025 King’s Birthday Honours for services to digital transformation.
Heather Thomson, CEO of The Data Lab, said: “The last five years have seen continued acceleration in technological advancements, particularly in AI, increasing the need for digital, data and AI literacy. Scotland has a unique opportunity to harness the power of data and AI to drive inclusive economic growth, benefit society, close the skills gap, and lead in responsible innovation, and The Data Lab is well equipped to support in achieving this ambition across industries and sectors.
“Nic is a champion of digital transformation with a strong portfolio in governance. Given her breadth of experience, I am confident that she will steer The Data Lab’s bold ambitions to continue generating economic and societal impact, supporting responsible data-driven innovation and AI adoption and growing as an organisation aligned and contributing to national priorities.”
Granger added: “I’m excited to be taking on the role of Chair of The Data Lab Governance Board at a time when the responsible use of data and AI is central to creating a connected society and strong economy. Scotland has a unique opportunity to harness the power of data and AI to drive inclusive economic growth, close the skills gap, and lead in responsible innovation.
“As an active member and mentor in The Data Lab Community for many years, I have long admired The Data Lab’s work. I look forward to working closely with Heather, the board and the wider team to evolve our strategy and ensure that The Data Lab continues to deliver impact that changes lives and helps to boost Scotland’s economy.”
Granger replaces Les Bayne, who has held the chair role since 2021.
Thomson added: “During his time as chair, Les has brought a great deal of expertise and continues to champion the vision and act as an ambassador, and we wish him all the best for the future.”
